Celeste Barber buys in Tweed
Actor, comedienne and Instagram sensation, Celeste Barber has purchased a penthouse unit in a 1980 block overlooking Rainbow Bay in Tweed Heads. Ms. Barber grew up in Terranora just inland from Tweed so it is a homecoming of sorts.
Celeste has built a cult international following with her sendups of celebrities and their social media posts. This grew exponentially when her campaign to raise funds for the NSW RFS during the recent fires/climate change emergency brought in a phenomenal $50M. This was boosted by the fundraiser hosted by Chris Hemsworth at our own Beach Hotel. Ms. Barber was rewarded on the night with a highly coveted ‘Hemsworth Sandwich’: a double hug from Chris and Liam Hemsworth.
Tom Misner is back on the hill
Tom Misner, an ex-local who likes to keep an eye on the BRW Rich List, is back in the Bay. Mr. Misner has lodged a major DA with council for a rural dual occupancy, sheds, and pool on Coolamon Scenic Drive, Coorabell. Site works have begun and will cost an expected $11.22M. This is small change after Misner’s 2010 sale of SAE, his music education business. The price tag for the global chain of audio and media schools was originally $1 billion, but Tom decided to sell the business and keep the freehold and so walked away with only $300M. The previous Misner residence was on the Coopers Shoot escapement overlooking Suffolk Park. After offloading that pile, he spent some time in Europe but Byron obviously called him back. I hope he keeps the very cute original farmhouse with an old-style petrol bowser just beside the road as a reminder of Byron’s past.
Top Shop, 65 Carlyle Street, Byron Bay
The Top Shop is at the top end of Carlyle Street, at the roundabout with Massinger St. It has become an icon of the Byron cafe scene, with latte sippers and gourmet munchers relaxing on the wide nature strip outside. The cafe business is staying on and has a long lease. At the back of the shop is a four-bed, 2 bath house with plenty of parking. The house and shop freehold can be bought together for $5.5 million, or separately by negotiation. Listed with Christian and Brad at Pacifico Property.
625A Myocum Road Myocum
People who follow these things may remember Myocum’s ReGenesis project in the mid naughties. This large rural acreage had a previous life as an eco/sustainable farm and is now well into its next incarnation with a similar theme – this time with a crew called Conscious Ground. The previous iteration proposed a wind turbine on-site and this created a lot of push back at the time. Conscious Ground is also proposing an eco-farm and have lodged a DA for rural tourist accommodation. The intention is to ‘provide visitors with a complete experience of a working organic fruit and beef farm that practices regenerative farming practices’. The DA is to build 6 cabins to accommodate visiting students. I have been to this property and know the applicants and this is a genuine working farm and educational facility. It is not a ruse simply to get tourist cabins approved.
551 Left Bank Road, Mullumbimby
What I believe to be the last 100-acre parcel of land under $2M is on the market. Properties of more than 100 acres are in demand due to the re-interest in stronger agricultural pursuits but also because this size allows for up to five Farm Stay cabins to be DA approved. This property has a lot of camphor on it and the house is only ordinary. But the higher reaches have reasonable views. Yours for $1.88M through Adam at Chincogan REA.
Habitat, Bayshore Drive, Byron Bay Arts and Ind. Estate
Stage 1 the new release of Habitat Easy Street apartments went online last month and the entire ground floor was sold out in five minutes. Only 10 units remain on the first floor and they are priced from $495,000 to $590,000. They are listed with Kris Alcoriza from Precise Property and a couple of other agents. Stage 5 is the last stage at Habitat. There is a Community Consultation Session on Friday 7 February in the large meeting room from 5.30 – 7 PM.

52 Ruskin Lane Byron Bay
A brand new duplex of 3 bedrooms, pool and views over Byron to the North. It is an off-market sale with hopes of $2.5m. The property is set up for Holiday Letting. Ruskin Street is likely to be the southern boundary of allowed holiday letting, assuming some version of the new restrictions are legislated (and enforced). Listed with Christian Sergiacomi at Pacifico property.
Peppers Retreat, Newes Road Coorabell
The old Peppers site is for sale. It has 12 self-contained cabins, with a total of 72 beds on 66 acres and is expected to sell for $10–14M. Listed with Michelle Jackson at Byron and Beyond REA. This has been on and off the market since the Peppers Chain sold it some years ago.
28 Argyle St Mullumbimby
Not everyone is a fan of the Kollective but the company is servicing an under-catered segment of the market. The Kollective develops larger blocks of residential land into smaller units. Their latest venture is six 1 and 2 bedroom units at 28 Argyle St Mullumbimby. Buyers can purchase off-the-plan by contacting First National Byron Bay.
20 River St New Brighton
910 M2 of oceanfront vacant land is for sale through Raine and Horne Ocean Shores. It goes to auction on Feb 29 and expecting around $1.5 – $1.7M. I’m told that inquiries have been ‘phenomenal’.
324 Gordon Road, Koonorigan
‘Go west young man,’ was the refrain seducing adventurers to the American West. This stunning-looking property on 50 acres is 20 minutes west of Lismore and asking $990,000. It would be worth three times as much if it was 20 minutes from Byron.
135 Rocky Creek Dam Road, Dunoon
In the same idea as above. This charming wooden cottage is on one acre and a short hop away to Rocky Creek Dam. It has three beds and two baths and build in the 195o. A steal at low $700K. Talk to Paul Prior at First National Byron Bay.
15 Tamarind Court, Suffolk Park
This is a cheapie on non-oceanside Suffolk Park. Anything under $1M in Byron is highly sought after. This 3 bed, 1 bath, single garage brick home is listed for $785,000 – $830,000. It is on 400 M2 and can rent for $720 PW. This makes it a good investment, or offers potential for a first home buyer. Listed with Jeremy Bennet from Byron Property Sales.
