Hi Mark, Good points. I think the North Byron Parklands site was chosen because it had such a great natural amphitheatre which works well for big spectator events.
We all thought that combining all the festivals in the Tyagarah site was the best option but I think there were egos and politics at play. I am not 100% sure but I think there was some hesitation with joining up with Peter Noble and pitching everything in with that site.
Everybody seemed to accept the muddy site in the end. Have you seen pictures of Glastonbury? It is a bog site every year but people just get on with it. Fire risk - that is an issue but I assume that in high fire risk season they will have to postpone or cancel.
My opinion is that its better to have it there than not have it at all. I took four teenage girls, thay all had a great time and I did as well.

Hi Michael,
You seem to have been a supporter of North Byron Parklands and 'Splendour' over the time. With respect, good for you, each to their own opinion wise; but as I believe you are aware, I was involved in the opposition to this festival site for over 5 years. I do have an acute understanding of the legitimacy, or lack thereof, of it's ultimate approval and conditions of operation. The recent Splendour fiasco is clear proof of the simple fact the site is vulnerable to flooding. Whether it was the staging areas, camping or carparking areas; all were non functional for the majority of the festival. There was a lack of adequate staffing and reasonable contingencies to protect the patrons who paid top dollar and when it was all said and done were not appropriately compensated. In my opinion the promotors failed in all respects. No excuses. For interest sake, Peter Noble of Bluesfest fame had the opportunity to purchase the Yelgun site many years prior to it being acquired by the Splendour crew. At that time Peter established it an unsuitable site on many fronts including it was particularly flood prone. Aside from a multitude of legitimate environmental and public amenity issues, from a safety perspective it is also vulnerable to bushfire. So when weather conditions are not heavy rain resulting in flooding it's only a matter of time before there is the threat of Bushfire which could affect the Summertime Falls Festival. Imagine 25,000-50,000 patrons endeavouring to escape from the site and all of the ramifications in the event of a bushfire. Emergency Services all had reservations or were against this site for many legitimate reasons including the recent Splendour flood fiasco. Specifically the Police, Rural Fire Service and Area Health were all uncomfortable with approval being granted through the development application process.
I could ramble on but I'll spare you; the irony is there was and is a perfect site for any festivals, including Splendour or Falls to be conducted within the Byron Shire; Tyagarah Bluesfest which is utilized only once each year at Easter. It is logically a superior site clearly more bonified to importantly protect the patron to enjoy any events they are attracted to pay rather expensive tickets to attend. How ridiculous it is we have 2 major festival sites within the one shire. In good faith as I believe I've advocated previous; I'd be more than happy to discuss further at anytime.
Kind Regards Mark Lycos
